If You’re Worried About Travel Writing…Don’t Be

Updated: Mar 28th, 2010

Travel writing can be an exciting career. The places to see and people to meet are endless. It can be a very rewarding career both personally and professionally. Sadly, not all people follow their dreams. Most will give up on their dream of becoming a travel writer before the “seed” has time to take root. Yes, just like planting a garden, travel writing takes time and the dream must be nourished each day.

One way to get started in travel writing is to start a blog. Write about what is familiar or a particular travel niche. From traveling with pets to cruise ships to all about Poland, travel writers have many options. Sign up for a FREE blog with Blogger or WordPress.com Please note that WordPress.com is a FREE blog but cannot be monetized. Visit WordPress.org for a FREE blog that can be monetized. It is necessary to have knowledge of HTML and web hosting companies such as 1&1 where you can Order 1&1 Business Hosting. Get free domains, free marketing tools, free PPC $$$ and more. Look for part-time travel writing opportunities. This is a great opportunity to “try it before you buy it.” Peruse websites such as Travel-Writers.com and sign up for their newsletter. With the newsletter comes travel writing opportunities from across the world. Inquire about one or two opportunities and see what happens. Another organization that offers a FREE newsletter is AWAI. In addition to the newsletter, AWAI sends out a listing of job opportunities every Thursday. Travel Writers with graphic design skills will have double the opportunities.

Alas, travel writing may not be the career he or she thought it would be. Many aspiring travel writers may take rejection too hard. Others may not want to invest the time it takes to “nourish” the dream or polish their skills with classes or courses. Like anything in life, dedication and determination go a long way. One way to find out if travel writing is the right path to travel is to just do it! Sooner or later the answer will reveal itself.
