A Travel Writer’s Education from Home

Updated: Mar 28th, 2010

How many people loved being in school? Come on, raise your hand! Receiving an “advanced” education today is not like it was “back in the day.” Just go online and type in “college, course work, or university” and you will receive many listings for “online” instruction. That’s right! You can get a travel writer’s education from home! Excellent!

Start by visiting AWAI. They offer many writing courses such as travel writing! I also suggest that you sign up for their FREE weekly e-letter called The Golden Thread. I signed up for the e-letter, and I have found it to be very useful. Not only do they give you great information, but each Thursday they send you job postings. Sweet!

Another website for you to check out is offbeattrips.com. They offer an “university approved” course that will give you the “tools for success” in travel writing. The course will teach you ” how to be proficient in creative writing, market yourself, and develop commercial strategies to secure sponsorship from carriers and tourism organizations.” FYI: offbeattrips.com also offers readers FREE TIPS on travel writing. Read the FREE TIPS and then decide whether or not to sign up for the course.

If you are interested in “boosting your creativity and motivation at the touch of a button,” then visit writersmind.com. The website offers travel writers a “Get Writing” and “Writing Visually” series which is a great resource to enhance your creativity, focus, and use of words. I find the information to be very helpful. What a great resource! And it’s FREE! You can educate yourself in travel writing versus paying for a course or two. The choice is yours!

Another website to visit is The Travel Writers Life. They also offer a FREE e-letter in addition to courses in travel writing. I receive the e-letter, and I find it to be useful. Lately, the e-letter has included “tips” on photography. Adding photos to your travel writings is becoming very popular! FYI: in addition to courses, they also offer seminars that you can attend.

I believe this a good start for you to discover how you can receive an “education” in travel writing from home. If you feel the desire to take a couple of courses, then go for it! Start with one course and see how it goes. Do your homework! Remember, education is not “one size fits all.” Find the right “travel writing” course for you!

Educatingly yours,
~ Rebecca
