Hi Martha! If your goal is to write travel for a newspaper or magazine, then you will need to adhere to the "rules" of writing. Grammar and punctuation are imperative. You may want to familiarize yourself with AP and The Chicago Style Manual.
If you plan to blog, well...blogging is another thing. Yes, you want to be aware of grammar and punctuation, but blogging is different from writing an article for Conde Naste. Bloggers can (sometimes) get away with "writing how they speak." You want to write so people can understand and follow your article.
The key ingredient to travel writing is finding your voice and style. Everyone has a different style of writing. Plus, it will depend on what an organization is looking for.
I hope this helped. Let me know if you need more information.

Hmmmm....writing skills. Well, I'm one of those writers who is a stickler for adhering to the rules of proper writing. I do have a "pet peeve" about people who end their sentences with a prepositional phrase. I think if you're going to write something, it should be written in a proper manner, no matter the "niche." Yes, travel writing is a "niche" market but that does not mean you should throw out all of the rules of writing!
BTW...love the weekly recaps...very creative titles!

I think the level of writing skills will vary depending on who you're writing for. Are you writing for a travel agency? Is it a cruise line? Magazine or Newspaper? Is it a fun blog? If you write for a blog and they expect you to be "light, fun, and humorous," then you're not going to write a post that would be published in National Geographic magazine.
You want your marketable and transferable writing skills. Remember that saying "about putting your eggs in one basket." Just look at Wall Street. How many people didn't diversify their funds? Just something to think about. Later!

In response to Love2Travel, many people end their sentences with a preposition. Take a look at the writing on the internet. For example, unless you're writing for a major publication, blogging about travel tends to be pretty loose.
Like the weekly recaps, they're witty, yet informative. Keep it up! Oh know..I ended with a preposition. See ya.
