Do you think entering a writing contest can improve you chances of being published?

I think entering contests are a great idea. Not only do have a shot at being published, but you can WIN prize money! I had a poem published in the Ohio Writer newsletter. The poem was based on the cover of the previous issue. True, it had nothing to do with travel writing, but I was still published. I have a copy of the newsletter in my portfolio.
