Writers often dream about getting published in a magazine or newspaper. What if the editor says "Yes" to your query? Then what? Deadlines? Writing? Negotiation of payment? Vague details? Oh, the pressure! Any advice from experts would be appreciated.
What if your query letter is a success? How do you handle the pressure?

Congrats to you if your query letter is a success! Take a deep breath and dive right into the project. Make sure you understand the assignment and ask questions to clarify what you don't understand. If you have a question about payment, negotiate with the editor. If you require more time, speak to the editor and be honest. Make sure you know the deadline and schedule your time accordingly. Happy writing...

Hi BillieJean
Rebecca is right but I would add that if you're not already well prepared in advance - by studying the magazines editorial/submission guidelines (which most of the time specify terms for payment and submission deadlines), AND have your story already written (although it may require some editing), then don't count on getting an acceptance. Assignments are different, but not handed out as freely these days as they were in the past, since Editors are typically already inundated with already-written stories to publish.
There is FIERCE competition these days, and a writer who is not prepared will find his/her query letter tossed into the trash can very quickly......
