Great minds think alike. I thought of a couple of domain names, but they were taken. Any insight on how to handle this.
What if the domain I want is taken?

Good question. I've run into this and just thought of new domain names. If you really wanted a domain, maybe you could contact the person and ask if they're willing to sell

Good Lord, there's so much to doing business online. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with everything from domain names to social media to viral marketing and everything in between. I do my best. I was not born and raised in the "technology" generation. It takes me awhile to learn some of the concepts.

Yes, there's a lot to conducting business online. Angela, I agree with Rebecca that if you really want a domain name, you could contact the owner and try to buy it. The other alternative is to change the Top-Level-Domain ending. i.e., .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .name, or .pro.

I don't know about buying a domain name, it could be expensive.
My vote is to come up with another domain name. I thought the .net, .org, .info, etc...were for specific businesses such as not-for-profits, educational institutions, etc...Does anyone have any insight on this?

I used hyphens... womenontheroad.com was taken - so I used women-on-the-road.com - it's a little bulkier and you have to keep reminding people to hyphenate, but at least I got my domain name.

@Scribetrotter - you bring up a very valuable point - when you have a domain that has more than one word, then there is more than one version - there is one with, and one without hyphens. And the more words you have in your domain name, the more potential versions. For example, in Scribetrotters case, there are many - womenontheroad.com, women-ontheroad.com, women-on-theroad.com, women-on-the-road.com, womenon-theroad.com, womenon-the-road.com, and womenonthe-road.com......
Would I recommend that you get them all? Yes, if you can for a reasonable cost, no if you have to pay more than a reasonable cost. The reason to have the alternate variations of your domain name is simply to prevent someone from competing with you with your own name. Yes, it does happen, but most often when the [revenue] stakes are high such as when you're selling a product. But why give anyone the opportunity if you can lock up the extra domains for a few dollars a year?
Also, be sure to check out who has any alternate variations of they are not available when you are looking for a domain name - if someone is using it, and doing a very good job of it, you would be competing with them for site traffic. If you think you can do a better job then you might want to go ahead and get the variation that they didn't and go for it. If not, keep searching for a different domain name, hopefully one that you can get all the variations of.

Wow! Thanks for the great ideas...never thought about hyphenating. I didn't even think about purchasing variations. Hmmmm.....
