I believe that Twitter can work, but perhaps not if you are one of the "this is what I ate for breakfast brigade" (unless of course it was an amazing bite at some delicious destination!)
I now filter out twitter overflow, e.g. the noise that comes from "top twits" via my business networking tools (LinkedIn, Plaxo).
So for me to receive twitter then both the person who twits and the twittering has to be relevant and/or interesting.
How will all of the people find your twittering? Can you advertise your blog site or writing skills by twittering? How does that work if you don't know who are the people you want to attract?
Or is it the other way around. You use your blog to showcase your writing skills, you use social or business networking tools to expand your contact base, and you then amuse / inform your contact base (and advertise your skills) by twitting ??
Let people know when you have a new blog post, or had an article published somewhere, or your new book is launching. Let them know when you're on a trip and where you are - sort of like "mini-blogging" - keep it relevant to why they are following you and try to keep it interesting. SO yes, use your blog to showcase yourself, and use the social networks including Twitter, to grow your contact base and to keep them up to date on you and what you're doing.
