I have managed to put the twitter and facebook icons in my sidebar and they even link to the right pages on facebook and twitter. So far so good.
The thing is that they open in the same window and not in a new one as I would like. I placed the icons in the sidebar via a widget that came with my WP theme, but I don't seem to have the choice in opening in the same window or a new one, like I have when I make an internal link.
Does anyone know a way to fix this?

That depends on the widget - is it a text widget, where you can see the HTML code that creates the links and refers to the images? If so you can modify the HTML code for the link to add this:
target="_blank"
I would suggest for simplicity's sake that you put it after the <a but before the href= so it would read like this:
~<a target="_blank" href=" ~
If you can't modify the widget itself, you may be able to modify the code that creates the widget but that's pretty challenging if you're not used to modifying code.....
You could also contact the theme developer to ask that he/she make this an option for the widget - often theme developers are very responsive to reasonable requests.
