Can travel jobs like being a tour guide or working for an agency help you get started in travel writing?

If you're in college, extra cash is always welcomed! Working in a travel agency could help with your travel writing and it may get you some discounts on travel. Check out STA Travel, they're always looking for college kids. You could work for them, take vacations, and write about your experience. Who knows, maybe you could become a tour guide for one of their trips. Being a tour guide is another way to break into travel writing. Just think of the stories you'll have to tell. Remember that being a tour guide requires "people and communication skills." If people annoy you, do not become a tour guide. You'll encounter many different personality types. On the flip side, if you're a "psyche major," it could be to your benefit -- you'll learn a lot about people. Hope this helped...

Thanks for the tips -- I would not mind being a tour guide. I wonder if I could work for AAA? I'll check to see if they're hiring...

Just read the blog "Sail into Travel Writing on a Cruise Line." Great post! Maybe I'll check into this as well. It could be an interesting travel job. It's one way to see the world.

I'm glad everyone is finding us! Thanks! Sometimes getting started in travel writing requires being "creative and flexible" when it comes to jobs. I'm sure you've heard of that old saying "think outside of the box" -- put on your "creativity hat" and see what happens.
