I was wondering what folks would say is the one skill you need to really make money from your blog.

Hi Ralph
Boy it's tough to distill it all down to just one skill, but if I had to choose I'd go with compelling post titles.
The reason is that you asked about the ONE skill that will help you make money from your blog, and the only way to do that is to have people - lots and lots of them - come to visit your site.
What will bring them to your site? Curiosity about what you have for them there - a title can draw people to your site.
That said, I know you asked for only ONE skill, but really it's a more complex equation because if ALL the pieces don't fit together, your chances for success go way down.
So to optimize your odds, you really need to be sure that once a title draws them to your site, you offer them good enough content to keep them there long enough to find your highly-relevant, targeted ads.
It's also important to understand what keywords to target and how to use them, so that more people have the OPPORTUNITY to see your well-crafted and compelling post titles, by getting good ranking in the search engines for your keywords.
So it comes down to this (and this really is a bit oversimplified, but should serve to illustrate my point):
1. If you don't know how to find and use the right keywords, you won't show up in the search engines, so people will have a hard time finding your site links;
2. If you get well ranked for your keywords, but don't have a compelling title, people won't click on your links to get to your site;
3. If they get to your site, but you give them fluff instead of good content, they'll leave right away;
4. If you get them to stick around and read, but offer them irrelevant ads, they won't click on them.
Does this help? Keep asking questions!

You're so right about great post titles, Trisha. Whenever I manage to come up with a catchy one I can always see the clicks on that title go up in my stats. I don't know if the people who clicked on it actually stay to read more, but I do believe that at least some of them return.
Specially when you use Commentluv for comments a good title is important.Posted 1 year ago # -
I say writing. If the writing is dull and boring or not of any help, no one will visit.

I'm up early and thought I'd check the forum. Thanks for the great advice. I know there's a certain dynamic to making money from a blog, but I was curious if there was one aspect that stood out.
