Pitching a story to an editor can be easy, if you follow the publishers rule! First, read the publishers guidelines. Find out if you can email or call the the editor. If you email an editor, be sure to spell their name right! If you email an editor, write a few sentences about your idea and submit your work (per guideline) rules. Most importantly, have confidence in your work! Hope this helped...

I agree, reading the guidelines is imperative. Editors are busy people...

Remember too that the more ideas you pitch, the better you'll get at it, especially if you ask for feedback when an idea or story is not accepted. You may not always get feedback (as you point out, Editors are very busy people), but sometimes you will and it can help.
You can also try pitching your story ideas to smaller, local publications first to hone your pitch technique. An Editor at a very small publication may have a bit more time to give you the feedback that will help you improve.
