The answer to your question is YES! More and more publications such as newspapers and magazines are asking for photos to accompany a travel article. Remember the saying "a picture is worth a 1,000 words." Make sure your photos are high res such as 300 dpi (dots per inch) or more. A digital camera is a great investment for a travel writer. They've come down in price which is a good thing.
Bonus...You can sell your photos to publications and online websites. Not only can you make a living from travel writing but from the photos as well.

Another tip is to take two photos of the same setting/scene - one with people in it, one without - and submit both. That way if your article is chosen for publication the editor has a choice of which photo to use based on whichever seems more appropriate at the time. Also, some editors like to see people, and some don't. Since you never know which one might be the "tipping point" that makes them decide to publish your piece - why not double your odds!
