I noticed WordPress is on 2.9.2. I'm using 2.9. Is it necessary to update every time? What if I update and they go to 3.0?
Is it necessary to have the latest WordPress?

It isn't necessary at all, but often there are some nice improvements, or security fixes, so I do generally update, but not ever right away. I like to wait a month or even two, to make sure that any "bugs" get found and fixed first, then I'll update.
And it's generally also ok to wait and just do the the "major" updates (x.0) and not do every one of the minor updates.....

I usually wait. I haven't upgraded to 2.9.2 because 2.9.3 could be around the corner. And, who knows...they could be working on 3.0!

I think my version is still 2.9. I'm thinking of waiting for a newer version rather than upgrading mine every now and then. So far, I don't experience any problem with my site.

The minor releases are usually security fixes, so if you don't upgrade you might be leaving yourself vulnerable to an attack. In fact, hackers might target you because you don't have the latest version and know you are open to a particular attack because of it.
I always upgrade immediately.
