I'm not thrilled with some of my categories and have been thinking about deleting them. Is this a good idea? What's the harm in it? Thanks...
Is it a good idea to delete categories?

Oh my gosh Sarah I'm so sorry for missing this post! I hope you haven't done anything with your categories yet....
Although you can certainly do that - delete categories or change the names of them - it's something you must do with caution and care, because any posts in that category (that you want to delete or change) may have been indexed by search engines or linked to from other sites (via comments you've left of blogs that use the CommentLuv plugin, or via trackbacks and pingbacks), or possibly any links you've created from another post pointing to that post......and when you change a category name you may be changing the URL if your blog is set up to display the category name as part of the permalink.
You can find out by browsing some posts in your categories that you want to delete, and look in the address bar. If the category name is part of the URL, then you should use a plugin that will create page redirects (aka 301 redirects) for you to avoid any broken links and giving people a 404 error (page not found). Follow its instructions for each post in the category to be deleted/changed.
