I'm not thrilled with putting ads on my site, what can I do? I can't stand it when I visit a site and it's plastered with a bunch of ads.
I need to make money. What can I do? Do I put a ton of ads on my site?

No problem, just don't ad a ton of ads to your site. Tailor your ads to your site. You can put ads on your site without it looking tacky. I hope this helps.

Ads can overwhelm readers. I agree that you could choose ads that are relevant to your site. The beauty is that there are many ads you can place on your site. I suggest starting with Commission Junction. They pay on time! Unlike LinkShare which I discovered take a long time. CJ pays on the 20th of the month. I've been waiting for LinkShare to pay up...

Thanks for the information on CJ. Haven't done anything yet with ads. I guess I'll get a move on with this.

Affiliate marketing can be tricky. I wouldn't go "hog wild" with ads, if you're also considering PPC Marketing. You could dig yourself into a hole. This is where good content and SEO come into play. Make sure your ads draw your readers. There's a good chance that your readers may be interested in other ads even though they don't pertain to your website. The better you understand your readers, the better chance you have at succeeding.

Hi Richard - great question!
I think the key word you touched on there is "plastered" - I've been to sites where you have to hunt to find the content in and amongst all of the ads and google AdSense (or as I like to affectionately call it, google NonSense).....those sites are truly obnoxious and I rarely stay long enough to find what I went there for.....
So as long as you don't "plaster" your site with ads, I don't see why you shouldn't use them. You do want to have ads in a place they can be seen (burying them on your site just negates their purpose), but it doesn't have to be obnoxious.....the most important thing to consider is relevancy - why are people at your site and what relevant services or products might they be interested in.
You might also consider doing a weekly blog post of "products I recommend"......and be upfront about it - tell your readers that you do make a small amount of revenue from their purchases, but that you only recommend certain products that meet your strict criteria for approval. Try things out and review them, so you can speak from a perspective of experience.
Ads can work very well if they are done right - don't hesitate to keep asking questions until you feel like you're doing it right, as evidenced by the checks you're receiving! Good luck!

Hi Trisha
I am new to the site and wonder whether I can put this question to you - in case I can please answer it and in case I do not have the liberty - kindly advice so that I do not repeat this faux pas again.
I am an avid traveler and writer and would like to subsequently start my own travel site - in case I do how do I get these ads and how do I generate revenue from these ads.
Please excuse if the question is basic or infantile from your perspective - however as far as I am concerned this is important

Hello Sanjay,
For a brand-new site with little site traffic, your best bet is to choose ads through an Affiliate Network, such as CommissionJunction, LinkShare, or Google Affiliate Network. You set up an account with any or all of the Networks, then apply to the advertisers programs in order to get access to the ads. Some advertisers will want to manually approve sites, so be sure that yours is completed and has some good content on it, but many advertisers just automatically approve applicants. Be sure to choose ads that are relevant to your site and topics.
After you've built up some good traffic numbers, with a good mix of returning (loyal) and new site visitors, potential advertisers will be more open to placing direct ads on your site, and may even approach you with proposals.
All that said, there is a LOT to know before setting up a travel blog, so be sure to read the case study series I did - it's a couple of years old but still highly relevant and has a lot of advice and tips........start reading here at the beginning and follow each of the subsequent weekly installment to break it down into manageable tasks for yourself.
