Whew, school has been crazy 
I'm up early!
Wondering how many travel writing websites is too much? Have all these ideas, not sure if I should start multiple websites or just focus on one or two. Sounds funny since I have to study, write papers, and all of that stuff. Maybe my buddies can help me out!

I don't think there is any limit on how many different travel niche websites you can have, and I do think that if each of your travel niches is unrelated then you should have different sites for them. Really the only limitation is you and how much effort you'll be able to put into them.
One thing I can tell you is that Google loves to see sites that regularly feature fresh content, and will ignore those that don't. So if all of your obligations keep you from writing and adding good content on a frequent (at least weekly) basis, then don't let that deter you, but don't expect the site to do well in search engines or attract much traffic. Maybe someday you'll have the time to focus on the ones you truly care about, in which case those should do well.
Trisha - the one exception is if Carter is planning to do a info site i.e. "Restaurants in Mexico City" or something like that ... you could develop a suite of sites like that that don't need to be updated as often and are designed for adsense i.e. 100 sites making $1 / day is $100 day 
Generally though, I agree with you that it is a good idea to keep one site, grow it and then you also have only one site to promote.
Travel WRITING is only one very small part of the equation - promotion is almost equally important and often more so.
Again though, it all comes back to motivation ... are you looking for free stuff, make some money with adsense, or grow your resume / clips list.

Yeah, I guess I'll be creating different sites because they're not really related. Got a buddy that likes food so he's focusing on a culinary travel site, I like adventure travel, and another buddy likes to surf. Guess we'll be setting up different sites. We were thinking of combining them, guess that won't work. Schools been hectic, lots of studying.
