Hey Richard! I got started in travel writing about a year ago. I always loved to travel and write. I thought to myself, "I can do this for a living;" at least on a part-time basis. Anyway, I started with a blog and posted my writings. You can find FREE blogs all over the internet; check out WordPress.com, Blogger.com, and Travelblog.org. This is a great way to get started and build up writing samples.
As far as the difficulty, it all depends on how bad you want to write travel. Like any career or job, it takes times to build your writing skills. Unless, of course, you're already a fabulous writer. I hope this helps.

Hi Richard! Thanks for stopping by our forum. I stumbled into travel writing. Who knew! I always liked to write but got away from it. Anyway, I answered ad for a blogger position with a travel agency and that's how I got started in travel writing.
First, make sure you really want to pursue travel writing. It will take time and dedication to build writing skills; it's like any career. I see that Billie Jean mentioned starting a blog. That's a great way to get started.
Another way is to peruse the travel section of your local newspaper. Sometimes the editor will ask for travel article submissions. Write up an article about a trip you recently took or from a year or so and submit it.
You could always volunteer to write for a magazine or newspaper. Be careful because you don't want a reputation as a free writer. Hope this helps!

Hey! Don't think you're going to make a ton of money from travel writing. Yeah, it's nice to visit places and write about them, but who do you think you'll become Anthony Bourdain of travel writing!
I don't mean to sound cynical but getting started can be hit or miss; it depends on your level of writing. Don't expect to write for Travel + Leisure right away. And...check out Craigslist and other sites to see what people are paying. It's not that much; actually it's a joke. Some sites will pay less than $20 for an article, and they expect research and writing. Yeah, right! Peace!

Another way to get started in travel writing is to contact your local tourism offices. Make sure you have an article already written or an idea for an article. Speak to the "person in charge" and pitch your travel article or idea. Good luck!

Hi Richard. I too am starting out in the world of travel writing. I've had some luck with sites such as [url=http://www.odesk.com], finding freelance and article writing jobs. But they aren't necessarily geared toward strictly travel. I would imagine you could search other travel writing blogs to see if there are any job listing. Good luck to you!

Hey everyone....Another website to visit is http://www.FreelanceWritingGigs.com. They just revised their website, and I think their still working on it. They usually have a variety of postings from travel writing to sports writing to whatever kind of writing you're looking for. Jobs are broken into "telecommuting and on site."
