Welcome Duchess! I'm curtsying as I say that...just joking...Seriously, you could take several steps before you apply for freelance travel writing jobs. First, make sure your writing skills are up-to-date. Since you write on other topics, I'm sure your writing is "spot-on." Second, you could start a blog. For a free blog visit Wordpress.com or http://www.Blogger.com. Read submission guidelines for each job posting. Organizations will have different guidelines. Also, make sure your resume is current. Some job postings do require a cover letter, resume, and samples. I applied for a couple of freelance opportunities that required a resume and samples that were in Word (.doc file); a link to a website was unacceptable.

Carter here...freelancing full-time would be fantastic, but I'm not sure I would quit my day job, just yet...

If you have a day job, that's great! Keep it and freelance on the side. Build a portfolio of your work. Just be careful, especially if you're interviewing for a full-time writing position within an organization. Sometimes the "powers that be" frown upon freelancers. Whatever! Most writers/artists are freelancing on the side.

I've perusing Craigslist and have found some great opportunities. Just thought I would let you know; it doesn't hurt to give it a try. Be mindful of postings that ask for freebie content...Duchess

Yes, Craigslist has many writing opportunities. You may consider "putting yourself on Craigslist." Advertise your writing services. It couldn't hurt. Checkout Guru.com and sign up for the basic package for free. To bid on certain projects, you must pay a fee. When you receive projects and are paid for them, consider signing up and paying the fee so you can bid on higher paying projects...at least you'll already have the money to pay the fee...

I just read the post Travel Writers Use These Guidelines to Freelancing, good stuff! Most people do not think of travel writing as a career; they think of it as hobby. This post is great for those of us who would like to do this for a living in addition to other writing. Thanks for the advice...I never thought of doing a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis. It brings me back to my marketing classes...I better find my books

Just read the blog How Do Organizations Find Freelance Travel Writers?. Good stuff---thanks for the advice.

Yep! Some organizations receive 300 or more resumes or inquiries. It takes them awhile to go through all of the submissions. This is why it takes some time before you hear something about a writing opportunity. Welcome to the waiting game!
