I'm wondering if spam comments could be legitimate. I'll go through my folder and will find a few (not many) comments that are legit. What's an alternative to going through the folder each time? Thanks...
Could a spam comment be legitimate?

WordPress is supposed to automatically notify the author of a post when there is a comment left, so that it can be responded to.....but there is also a plugin that will notify both the author and the administrator or any other user that you "check" to get a notice. It's called "multi-author comment notification". I use it because I have a number of authors but I want to be notified as well.
I have my Settings >Discussion set to hold a comment in the moderation queue if it has 1 or more links in it (a common tactic for spammers is to include links in the comment), which means that if a comment has no links, it will generally get automatically approved unless Akismet thinks that it's spam. Which is where the email comes in handy....because it gives me the opportunity to make sure that Akismet is accurate.
So when I see the email come in I can decide then if it looks spammy and just click on the link to mark it as spam, but if it looks legit but was held for moderation then I approve it.
Does that help?

I'm notified when someone leaves a comment on my website, and I also use the Askimet spam. I think I've had one or two comments in spam that were legit, but the rest were spam comments.

I'm up early today even though it was a busy weekend! Thanks for the feedback on spam comments. I'll check out the "multi-author comment notification" -- thanks for the tips!

I've had legitimate comments left by real human beings with Keywords for a name. I mark them as spam.

I totally agree with Gary. If someone uses keywords instead of their name or a legitimate pseudonym, I mark their comment as spam.
I've only had one occasion that the comment left was really, really, good, so I left it but changed their name to Anonymous, and emailed them to ask them to please use their real name in the future. I don't think they ever came back.
