I've been reading articles by people who claim blogging will become obsolete. These individuals believe because there are so many blogs on the internet and people only have so many hours in the day to read them, blogging will become a thing of the past. What do you think? Is this true? Will blogging lose its thunder? Please share. Thanks.

I believe blogging will be around for some time. Some people believe blogging has lost its "thunder." There are many blogs on the internet and this is why people believe blogging will begin to taper off. If you're blog is interesting and adds value to people, it will gain traffic.

I agree with Rebecca - I think that not only will it be around for a long time, but it's definitely going to keep growing. If anything, people will just get pickier about what they choose to spend their time reading, but with populations rising all over the globe, and many of those people grow up with computers and blogging, there will never be a lack of readers out there.

Blogging isn't going anywhere. It will certainly evolve and mature and we might even call it something else, but the concept of self publishing on the internet is here to stay.
2009 was a huge year for travel blogs. The number of travel blogs exploded. When I started blogging, there were only a handful of self hosted sites.
I think we are in a bit of a bubble in travel content right now. Things like MatadorU, this site, and other projects being launched in 2010 will only increase the supply of travel content out there. Just like PhD programs in English Lit which keep churning out graduates into an overcrowded job market, the supply of travel writers and wannabe travel writers will keep getting bigger, pushing down freelancing rates.
Writers need to stop thinking of themselves as writers and start thinking of themselves as independent publishers. It is a different mindset. Go ahead and look for freelance work if you wish, but in the back of your mind keep in mind that you need to be building your own site and your own brand while you are doing work-for-hire for others.

An excellent point Gary - it's the direction this business is going in, so writers need to adopt that mindset or be left without a viable career...those that do will be ahead of the game and in better position when traditional print media finally draws it's last gasping breath.
