Oh Martha! Be careful when you answer ads from Craigslist. I've found that the majority of people who put ads on Craigslist are looking for FREE or "cheap" writing. Many people are starting-up magazines or websites. Apparently, start-up companies are not like they were back in the day. Most of these people probably do not have financial investors, therefore, they will not be able to pay you!
The ads may sound good, you answer them, and then -- you find out that the compensation is in "good faith." Chances are you will be compensated after the magazine or website "takes-off." I'm not opposed to writing for free, but you do not want to make a habit of it. So -- answer ads from Craigslist with caution!

Yeah, I agree that you must be careful with Craigslist. There are some legitimate companies that post jobs on Craigslist, but most of them look for FREE writing. If you're starting out, you may consider taking a few of these jobs. But, as Rebecca said, do not make a habit of it.

It's kind of a bummer if you think about it. I just had this happen to me. You answer an ad that states the compensation, you resonate with the magazine's mission, and you have conversations with the "publisher" to find out the next steps.
The next step is -- you have to send your resume and sample of work to the editor. The "publisher" is helping the editor of the magazine "find" writers to develop a relationship with for the magazine. You already sent in your resume and sample of work and now you have to go through the process a second time. I don't know...whatever happened to "saying what you mean and meaning what you say!"
I will decide whether or not to contact the editor. It's kind of disheartening. To be honest, sometimes I wonder if it's worth it...

Hey everyone, I just wanted you to know that I put myself on Craigslist. I was in the California and Phoenix markets. Ironically, I was being contacted by people from California so I took me out of the Phoenix market. I put myself in the NY market, but have not heard anything. I'm going to the try the UK market and see what happens...Stay tuned!
