If you have seen the film "Marley & Me", you will realise there are different types of writing.

As a newspaper journalist, you need to cover the 5 w's.

As a newspaper columnist, you need to insert yourself into the story, it really is about you!

Travel writing is the same.

In general no one wants to read a top travel magazine to find out what you had for lunch, unless of course you are a celebrity.

If you are writing a blog, you have to be right there in the middle of it, telling us about the world yes, but from your point of view.

The amount of "you" that is appropriate for a particular media is also a good guide to grammar and style. In blogging, how "you" write (and not how other people write) is how it should be. For Conde Nast, how "they" want it is how it had better be written!
