Being your own boss takes discipline. If you accept writing assignments, it's up to you to make sure they are completed. You will not have a manager looking over shoulder making sure you are doing your work. You are the manager! <img src="http://www.travel-writers-exchange.com/Forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_mrgreen.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" />

That is some list. I think you must be a "risk" taker as well. So many people would like to work for themselves, but they are used to the "comfort and security" (or illusion of this) of a full-time job. They are afraid to take a chance or they feel they are too old to do so. Life's too short, go ahead and try something new. You'll never know if you'll succeed or not unless you try.

First, do you really and truly want to work for yourself and be your own boss? If you can answer this question with a big "YES" then you are on the right path.

Second, you must be persistent and go after your dream. No one else will do it for you. You must commit yourself to finding new writing opportunities on a daily basis or at least every other day. They will not show up at your doorstep!

Third, be around "like-minded" people. Join an business or networking group. Find an entrepreneurial group to join. Being around people who are driven and passionate about what they do and it will "rub" off on you. You need support from individuals who like you want to be their own boss.

Fourth, develop your "brand." This can be tricky, especially if you're a talented writer who can write on many topics. But, if you are a great writer, your writing will speak for itself.

If you enjoy writing about RV Travel or Road Trips, position yourself in these fields. Find blogs to comment on and books to read on RV Travel or Road Trips. Interview people and find out what they did. Write about your travels and contact the editor at local newspapers and magazines.

Fifth, be flexible in your writing. This means to learn to write in different styles and tones. It also means to step out of your writing "comfort" zone. Write about something other than your niche market; you may surprise yourself.

Sixth, if you have a day job, keep it. Work on your dream on a part-time basis, you'll arrive soon enough.
