If you want to pay a nominal fee of $10 or $20 to enter a contest that is paying $100+ as a prize, you may want to give it a try. If not, look for local magazines and newsletters in your area and submit your work to them. I did this when I lived in Ohio. I wrote a poem based on the cover of an issue of The Ohio Writer Newsletter, and they published my poem in the following newsletter.
