Trisha Miller on "How many keywords could you have?"

I don't think you should limit yourself in terms of the number of keywords that you want to use to draw visitors to your site, but you should choose only 2 or 3 keywords/phrases to focus on with each article or blog post. More than that and you'll confuse the search engines and dilute the few you really want to rank for.

The important thing is to make sure that whatever keywords you do use are relevant - and this means periodic keyword research since you'll discover new keyword that you didn't realize people were using when searching for topics that your site encompasses. If you keep your keywords highly relevant, then the search engines will have no confusion over what your site is about.

Another thing to pay attention to is how competitive any particular keyword is - for example, don't even bother trying to rank for the word "travel" - you'll never get ahead of the large travel sites, as they have teams of people focused on SEO and millions of dollars to spend on it. Search for the more unusual phrases and what are called "long tail" keywords ( a fancy way of saying keyword that are really sentences of three or more words strung together). If you were to focus on "travel tips for traveling to Antarctica" you'd have a better chance of getting a high page ranking in the SERPs....

Good luck with your testing!

You could hold teleseminar's on your travel writing. Perhaps others would be interested in your niche market. You could upload videos and podcasts. You could sell your own products/services on your website.

I agree with Trisha. The next step to take would be marketing strategies. If you're at that point, go for it. If not, do what you can to get more links to your website and network.

Hi WM2 - those are all great techniques, so keep doing them!

Unless you are ready to start spending money on marketing strategies (which I DON'T recommend unless you have a product that you're selling), then there are TWO ways to get people to your site:

1. By following a link: Getting as many links to your site 'out there' as you can, which includes all the ways you've previous mentioned, PLUS guest blogging, asking other sites to add a link to you, and making sure that you're offering enough good content to attract links; and

2. By finding you via a search: Making sure that the search engines know what your site is about so that it can get properly indexed AND focusing adequately on SEO techniques to make sure it ranks well so that they can send you more traffic.

The only "new" things that come down the path are the networks you can take advantage of, but the methods remain the same: Quality content, focus on SEO, gain inbound links.

I was wondering if there are any "new" techniques that you've discovered to increase traffic flow to your website. I've been doing the regular techniques (commenting on forums, blogs, social media, etc...)but I'm wondering if there's anything new. Thanks for sharing.

I have to agree with James (I guess that make me old-skool too <img src="http://www.travel-writers-exchange.com/Forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_biggrin.gif" title=":D" class="bb_smilies" /> )

I have so little time but I do try to keep up with the email newsletters I get - I definitely prefer the ones that get right to the point, and use HTML and graphics sparingly, if at all. I just need to digest the meat and get on with it.....BUT all that said if the newsletter included a VERY SHORT video, and it was clearly introduced (what's in the video and why I should watch it), then I MIGHT check out the video - if it's more than a minute or so, it had better be VERY valuable, and if you fool me once with a hook to watch a video that is nothing but fluff, you'll never again get me to click on one.....

SO I'd advise you to use them carefully, only for truly valuable stuff you want to share, and ask for feedback. If your readers aren't watching them, or you see subscriber counts go down, that will answer your question better than we can!

I personally don't like Video Emails ... I am an old-skool <img src="http://www.travel-writers-exchange.com/Forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" /> text email guy with some use of HTML email (as long as the text from the HTML email is readable on my phone).

I get a couple videos a week from people and generally I don't click because it simply takes too long to process the info vs. quickly scanning the text.

The only exception would be for promoting your site i.e. including a video in your newsletter or maybe blasting an email out to your friends saying "check out this awesome spot I am at" ... but then that is mostly just a link to a video any how.

Hope this helps <img src="http://www.travel-writers-exchange.com/Forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

I may begin to use AWeber, but I'd like to stand out from the crowd. Just heard about a company that does "video emails." Sounds interesting and some companies do use it. Would like to know what other people think about video emails...Thanks!
