If you feel your worth a specific price and can back it up, charge it! Most writers starting out will charge $10 to $20 per article, but I've seen articles as high as $100+ per article! Remember, the time you spend on an article is just as valuable and people will pay for that. You may have to do some research and it's only right that you get paid for that time. It just depends.
The main thing to remember is to have CONFIDENCE in you and your writing. If you're not confident, why would anyone else be? Take a look on the internet and see what other writers are charging. This will give you a good basis for your rates. Hope this helps...

Great question, Sarah! I'm sure every writer puzzles over this at one time or another.
Rebecca already gave you the most important advice - to spend time researching what the going prices are for various media - online and offline will have vastly different rates per word or article, and sometimes it can vary depending upon whether or not you get credit (a byline and/or links) or not. Research through a wide variety of writers, publishers, and associations or organizations dedicated to writers.
Also, be wary of setting your price based on what's offered and paid at online job sites where you must "bid" on jobs - at those sites you're competing against writers from other parts of the world, where the cost of living may be so much less that they can accept a much lower fee -- they can be a great place to pick up assignments while you're developing your writing skills and building a name for yourself, but ultimately you'll need to broaden your freelance employment base to earn what you're worth.
