I'd like to be more efficient with my trips. I'm not much of a planner, but if I could use a few tools to give me more travel time, I'm open to them. Plus, it would give me more trips to write about each year. Thanks!
What travel tools do you use?

I always bring a laptop and a variety of cables to make sure I can upload photos and articles wherever I am. I have also used an iPhone for note, both typing and audio. Of course, I can't help but think the new iPad may replace everything.

I use something called http://www.gcmap.com/ to check my destinations. It will calculate distances and do all sorts of neat tricks so you can plan your travels in a more efficient manner.

OTRA, forgive me but I'm having a little trouble understanding your question...can you explain a bit more what you mean by "efficient"? And how does efficiency translate into more trips? Sorry if I sound dense, but I don't understand how any 'tool' can give you more travel time......
If you're looking to travel more frequently, you may want to consider applying for more media trips (aka press trips). Keep in mind that in many cases you have to "qualify" to attend, you'll need to be prepared to offer information about where your articles get published, and circulation numbers (or traffic stats if online)......but generally if you join some groups or organizations (such as travelwriters.com or the IFWTWA.org) they have access to information about media trips.
Another way to travel more is to become a tour guide - although most tour companies are inundated with applicants, it does tend to be a high turnover industry, and if you're qualified you stand a decent chance of getting a job that involves travel.
I'm looking forward to hearing back from you - I think if I can understand better what you're looking for I may be able to offer more suggestions.
