I would like to add some widgets to my WordPress blog. What are the MUST HAVE widgets that will help me to optimize my blog/website?
What MUST HAVE widgets do you recommend for a blog?

Great question. There are a ton of WordPress widgets. I think it depends on your website. You may want a calendar widget, a currency widget, YouTube widget, or something else. Personally, I wouldn't put too many widgets on your website. I think they can slow it down.

Generally speaking Widgets themselves won't slow your site down, but some of them that use interactive media, like videos, can so you'll want to be reasonable about what you stuff into your sidebars.
However, you mention that you're looking to "optimize" your site - all Widgets do is allow you the flexibility to determine what - and where - things get displayed in your sidebar......like Rebecca mentioned.....your Calendar (if you want one), a list of recent posts or comments, a list of your categories, etc. They don't do anything to "optimize" your site......not in the sense that we normally use the word "optimize", which means to help the search engines to know what your site is about so that they can rank it appropriately if someone is searching for sites like yours.
But if you're speaking strictly about how to structure your site - primarily for site visitors - then I recommend that at the very minimum you have Widgets related to navigation, such as Recent Posts, Categories, Archives, and Pages, so that people can easily find their way around your site and locate what they want to read. After that, add all the fun stuff you want!
