Just curious as to what you think about 2010 and travel writing. How will it change? How will it transform? Will their be an influx of new travel writers? How can travel writers stay fresh in the world of travel writing? I'm looking forward to 2010...wishing you the best!
What does 2010 look like for travel writers?

More of the same from 2009.
More magazines will close. Fewer newspapers will run travel sections. More people will try to make a living from running a blog.
The future is entrepreneurial journalism. This means being your own publisher. Some people will still earn money from freelancing, but the smart ones will use freelancing as a means to build their own online brands, not just for a paycheck.

Gary is right. The downward spiral of print media will continue, as we've seen with the recent closing of several high-profile, long-standing magazines. Many of the magazines and newspapers have already established online versions, and the rest are quickly following suit.
How to stay fresh? Keep offering new and interesting content. If you write about your own destination, make sure you're totally plugged into the local scene and write about everything that's going on around you, so that you're seen as the expert. If you write about traveling elsewhere, make 2010 the year you travel more, and uncover more interesting stories to write about.
Try to get published on as many other sites as you can, and network with as many other travel writers & bloggers as you can. Go to conferences and workshops. There will always be an influx of new travel writers, but the online publishing world is expanding rapidly too, so there will always be opportunities to get published, even if you don't get paid for it, and as Gary said, the smart writers will focus on brand-building.
