Is there a common way to get started in travel writing?
What do others do to get started?

Thanks for the question. I could use a break from writing. I have writer's block...Don't worry, I'll be able to answer your question
Some people "fall into" travel writing. They write about their summer vacation and send it to their local newspaper and "poof" a travel writer is born. It could and does happen. Some people are writers in another "niche" such as health and wellness and to bring in extra income, they'll apply for travel writing opportunities.
The main thing to remember about travel writing is that it's writing. If you're passionate about writing your passion will come through when you speak to people. On a personal note, this has happened to me. I had a few people tell me that they felt my passion for writing. It did not matter if I was applying or bidding on an opportunity other than travel writing. My passion came through, and I landed the opportunities. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Rebecca makes some good points. I think most people get started by simply writing about what they know - either they've taken a trip somewhere and kept a journal (or wrote about it when they got home), or sometimes they write about their hometown as a destination for someone else. The point is that they just sit down and start writing. It takes time and perseverance, because you'll likely re-write what you've written a few times until you have it just right.
Then comes the work of sending it out for publication........which is where you have to have thick skin and not get discouraged easily. You might get lucky and have your first article accepted, or it might take a while and several articles before you get one accepted. Don't give up and it will eventually happen.

One must travel in order to write about it. Writing about a niche that you like is a good place to start. Many people enjoy backpack travel. If this is your forte, then write about it. Review job boards and travel websites. Review the work of other travel writers. This may help you to get started.

Another tip is to work for a travel agency or AAA. You never know, it could lead you down a travel writing path that you only imagined. Travel agencies ought to hire people who are passionate about travel versus those who are just there to collect the paycheck! Take a look @ AAA's website. They are usually hiring. Good Luck!
