I'd like to visit Australia and a few other places but would like to stay some place other than a hostel. Any suggestions? Make sure they're affordable

Alternative to hostels:
1. Bed and breakfast.
2. Swapping apartments/homes.
3. Living with a family in exchange for doing some type of work.
4. Camping out.

I have no experience with it myself, but a friend on mine is always talking about Couch Surfing.

I have not tried couch surfing either, but there are several websites dedicated to it, and a lot of people doing it.
Sarah you don't mention if you're traveling alone or with friends, but don't forget that there are a lot of budget motels, and if you split the cost it's roughly the same as the cost of a hostel.
