What information could you share about your experience with affiliate marketing? I'm interested in knowing what programs work for you and how you make them work. Is it simply "keywords" and social media? What about blog content? Many thanks.

  2. Hi WM2

What works or won't work will be different for everyone's own site, because the key to making it work is to have affiliate ads for products or services that are highly relevant to why someone is at your site, reading a particular page.

For TWE, because we are all about the business end of travel writing, books about how to become a travel writer (or improve your writing) do well.

But if (for example) you're writing about how to travel with pets, the people reading your site are NOT likely to buy a book about travel writing, but will be likely to be interested in TSA approved pet carriers - does that make sense?

Relevancy is the key, and the way you ensure that you're ads are relevant is to be focused on your keywords - when both the content and the ads are related to the same keyword(s), you'll get the best results.

Thus, if your article is a review of a leash, an ad for a travel-friendly leash will perform better than an ad for a pet carrier.

Your blog content has to be GOOD and useful, because that's what keeps people at your site long enough to notice (and click on) an ad - if your content is weak or fluffy, you'll have a high bounce rate (people leaving your site quickly).

Social media is only used for promoting your site to draw in more readers - selling via social media is frowned upon, and you'll quickly lose followers if you get too 'salesy'.
