I was thinking about starting a new website using WordPress. I'd like to really focus on selling my writing services. Would it be possible to use the "Page" feature as a blog and have my Home Page, well as my Home or Landing Page. I want a more polished, professional look. What do you think?

I think I have done with my site what you are describing above.
I set up my website to promote myself as a writer, but also have a blog. I have used my name as domainname instead of my blogname.
The theme I used is called Suffusion, and it gave me the option to have a landing page with welcome text and below that the latest posts of my blog. That way it looks a bit more professional.
You can also create static pages that go on the navigation bar in different levels. Here's my URL if you want to check it out. http://www.mariastaal.com

Great advice Maria!
And Wordpress has that feature built in also, you can go to Settings >Reading and choose to have a static "Page" as your home page, once you've created that static Page.
Another idea is to create a "Sticky" post, which will always remain as the first post on your home page, without needing to change any settings or create a special Page....so you can create a "welcome" post, make it Sticky, and then below that will show your most recent blog posts.
