I heard the iPhone doesn't take great pictures. Does anyone have an suggested apps they use for improving the photography capability? Thanks...

Hi Angela
That's interesting, but I have to disagree with that statement because I've taken some great photos with my iPhone.
It's fair to say that you could get better resolution, and larger range of focus with a good SLR camera, but it really depends on what the purpose is for the photos you're taking. If it's for a glossy print publication, then you should use a good SLR, but if it's just for a photo to accompany a blog post, the iPhone will do a great job.
There are quite a few photo-related apps in the Apps Store, but I use one called Night Camera, which gives you better shots at night or in a slightly dark environment.

Some of my friends have the iPhone and they said the resolution could be better. We're trying to find apps to improve the photography capability of it which is better than most phones, but could be sharper.

I use iPhone pics on my blog all the time... the fact that I can upload on the fly without a computer is key. For anything requiring higher resolution/quality just about any point and shoot camera (and of course SLR) will do a much better.
The iPhone has a lot of "noise" in low light situations. Sometimes this can be improved by adjusting the noise slider in iPhoto or other photo editing software.
Apps like the one by Photoshop (and there are several others) have some features that let you adjust the saturation and add effects. Sometimes giving a photo an effect will distract from the image's shortcomings.
Here's link to a blog post that includes one such photo... below it are some photos that were taken with the iPhone's Pano App. http://www.onthewhiteline.com/2010/01/the-haunted-hotel/

I've been pretty happy with the photos I've taken with my iPhone, and like TravGirl I also use the app called "Night Camera" for nighttime shots - I've compared photos taken at night with and without it, and there is definitely a noticeable improvement when using it.

Here is an image I took with my iPhone: http://travelphotos.everything-everywhere.com/Other/SmugShots/8908601_6QyxR#730400200_7945e-XL-LB
I used an app called Pano to stitch 4 photos together.
The key with the iphone is to minimize the movement of the camera (have it on a surface if possible) and make sure to take photos in good light.
