I recently read an article about how some countries are going to subsidize travel. What do you think about this? Is travel a basic human right? Why would countries concentrate on travel when people need education, health care, jobs, etc...? Curious to know what everyone thinks about this.

Good question. I heard something about this as well. Personally, I'd think that education, health care, etc...would be more important than subsidizing travel. That's just my opinion. Everyone has the right to travel, but paying for it with government funds is another story.

Sometimes the only economy some places have is tourism - tourists can bring a lot of dollars into an area, more than the government can afford to spend on those other important programs, so it makes sense that by making some small subsidies available to bring in more tourists, the net result can be more money being spent in the area to help their economy.

Hey everyone - sorry I've been absent for so long - have been holed up writing!
Personally I'm all for subsidizing travel - anything that gets people out and traveling is a good thing, and if it encourages people to go somewhere that they otherwise might not go (because they can't afford it) then it all helps to make the world a smaller place.
Trisha's point about helping the economies of those countries that do subsidize travel is a very good one!
