Uh oh! Yes, France & England have quite a "bumpy" history. Then again, England has a bumpy history with many countries. That's how it was back in the day

I think every country has an opinion of England to be honest; Kazakhstan are still a little sensitive about the whole "Borat" issue.
Moving back to the original topic, I heard about sending speculative mail out to potential customers, to offer your services and advertise yourself. Have people had much success using this method?

Yep! We can all learn from being a bit more sensitive to others....Anyway, some people use speculative or direct mail and experience success with it. I personally have not done this. I am using the internet and "word-of-mouth" to advertise/market my services. This is still a powerful marketing tool.
One of the reasons I love to travel is because of the people I meet. I can sit for hours and listen to people tell me about their country, culture, etc...This is why prefer networking; I love PR. I signed up with a couple of entrepreneurial and artist/writers groups from Meetup.com. The one meeting I went to was a success because I met someone and we may work together. Also, she showed my business card to people in her coaching group. They were very intrigued by it. It was a conversation piece.
I go to my local bookstore because they have a section for businesses where you can post your business cards, brochures, flyers, etc... I also use my blog to advertise my services.
I will be teaching classes for the City of Chandler. At the end of class, instructors are allowed to handout their business cards, brochures, flyers, post cards, and other advertisement. Hope this helped....

Interesting, the business card method sounds very ideal, I should try that. I'm learning about HTML at the moment, ready to create my own website. It's slow but steady
