Good question. Self-publishing has pros and cons. The major pro to self-publishing is that you are in control of your book! You can design the cover or pay a graphic designer. You can market your book anyway you chose to do so. You do not have to sell a specific number of books. However, you probably have a number in mind so you can at least break even or earn the desired cash amount.
The major con to self-publishing is that you're responsible for everything from marketing to distribution. It falls on you, unless you recruit family and friends to help you out. Self-publishing can be a good way to ease into publishing. If you self-publish a book, you'll have first hand knowledge of what it's like to publish a book. The experience will be invaluable. You can then set a goal to sell your book to a publisher.

I agree, self-publishing can be a lot of work, but you do have control over your book. I knew a woman who had a "specific" target audience in mind for her book. The publisher had a different target market in mind. Obviously, my friend went along with the publisher, but she was not too happy about it. I gave her a few solutions: write another book for her "specific" target audience or self-publish her books in the future.
