I would like to attempt to write travel literature (think Paul Theroux) in addition to my usual blog posts. Has anyone written travel literature? What was the process like for you? Are you published? How long did it take you to finish your book? Thanks for sharing...

Hi Duchess
I am actually working on a travel book now (about my years of traveling as an army brat), but it's hard to find time to stay focused on it since I also have my "day" job and some travel writing courses I'm taking.
I found that if I set aside a couple of hours first thing in the morning, before going to my part-time job, I can get more done than if I wait for later in the day, but that's just me - some people do better at focusing in the evenings. You have to find a schedule that works for you.
A great piece of advice that someone else gave me a while ago, was to spend time at the websites of literary agents and small book publishing companies, because they have a lot of information and resources. I was also told to join a BOOK writers group, and find conferences for BOOK writers, not freelance writers, because you'll get more opportunities to meet agents and publishers.
Hope this helps!

I have not attempted travel literature. I'm mulling over the idea of writing fiction, but I'm not sure if it's for me. I prefer screenwriting because I'm a visual person and in a film you "show" versus describing. You may want to get some books on travel literature and keep reading your favorite authors. Attending a workshop or conference could help you learn more about travel literature.
