   I'm planning to set up a new blog for my travel writing. I have a personal family blog now so I'm pretty comfortable with how it works, but I'm a little lost on how it should look.

   I know it shouldn't be "cute" like my personal blog is, but wondering just how "professional" it should be - like a corporate site? How important is the look of the blog to potential publishers? Is having a travel "theme" important? I did a little searching around and found a few of what I think are travel blogs, but most of them look hokey - too many palm trees and cruise ships, and some are just too busy looking.

   What do you recommend?

   That is actually a very good question! I'm sure others will have a different opinion, but mine is that the most important thing about your blog is that it's easy to read and easy for your site visitors to find your content.

   I agree that some of them go way overboard on the "travel theme" styling, and many are just way to busy with blinking ads and flashy graphics - a site that is too busy can make visitors leave your site quickly, regardless of how well-written your articles are.

   So I recommend choosing a style that has an eye-pleasing color palette, and keep the focus on your writing and the photos that should accompany your articles - a simple style won't detract from your message.

   But do remember that you're building your "brand", so the site should incorporate at least some of your personality as well.

   Personally, I prefer clean and simple; a very user friendly site. If I have to search all over a blog or website to find what I'm looking for, I will click-off off it and find another blog/website. Some people do go crazy with graphics. Remember, less is more...

   I like clean and simple blogs. I think the travel background is a bit overdone. Be bold, be different, and change it up! Everyone has palm trees, surf and sand, and the European castle background. Make your blog stand out from the rest. Find examples of blogs on the internet that appeal to you and use them as a guide.

   I like the look and feel of Travel-Writers-Exchange.com. It seems to flow. Some websites are all over the place. It's amazing how much information put on a website...talk about too much information.

   Sometimes it's good to give your blog a makeover. If you're getting bored with you theme, change it.

   Usually simple and brandable is the key, you only have to look at google or twitter or flickr or even craigslist to see how simple they are but yet so popular. Just as long as it looks professional too! Good Luck!
