How much time do you spend on social media? I don't want to be tied to my computer for hours on end. I'd like to connect with others and build a following, but I'd like to have a life outside of my writing and promoting it

Most people spend one to two hours per day on social media (this includes writing your blog post).

I think I probably spend a little more than 2 hours a day during the week, but much less on weekends - I have to strike a balance somehow so even though I do work on weekends, I make an effort to work less and take time for myself and my family....and even though I really enjoy the time I spend on Twitter and Facebook and the connections I've made there, it still really is work.
If the primary reason you use social media is for promoting your writing, rather than keeping up with friends and family, then my best suggestion is to just structure some time into your day - maybe 30 to 60 minutes at both the beginning and end of your workday - to focus on it.
The most important aspect to being successful with it is to remember that it's interactive and a two-way street - don't just spew forth whatever message you're putting out, take time to respond to others as well - comment on their Facebook posts and retweet some of their tweets.....it's important to really establish a connection with people for it to have an impact.
