Been wondering how long you should stay with an affiliate program? I haven't been making any significant money on some of my programs. Feel I could use the time elsewhere. Appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks!
How long should you stay with an affiliate program before moving onto the next?

Experiment, experiment, experiment. If you feel that you aren't making a significant revenue from your affiliate programs either try a different program or re-arrange how you are presenting the ads (e.g., maybe try moving the Google Adsense from the sidebar to the top of an article or in the middle of an article). I not a marketing guru by any means but I've always felt that ads on the sidebar are almost being 'blocked' (subconsciously) by visitors as we are just so used to seeing them placed there. That is why switching up the position (in between article paragraphs) sometimes can be a bit better to increase click-thru rates.
I constantly play around with Google Adsense, Chitika, Commission Junction and Amazon Associates so keep experimenting!

I kind of figured I'd have to play around with affiliate marketing. I guess I'd rather spend my time writing or fishing! Never thought of moving the Google AdSense sidebar -- thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try.

The problem might not be with the affiliate program. It might be with the keywords you are targeting, the type of traffic you are getting, or the placement on the page.
Experiment with all those things in addition to trying other programs.

Bryan and Gary both make excellent points - you really do have to experiment quite a bit to get the right combination of placement and ads.....but I think Gary hit the nail on the head here, because IMHO the most important factor is relevancy to your site visitors.
You have to ensure that the keywords you are targeting are the right ones for the post/page/content so that the people coming to that page arrive happy with what they've found, not confused...that happens to me a lot when I'm searching for something, I click on a result that seems like it would be relevant to my search, but then when I get to that page, I can't figure out why it ranked for my search - it has little or nothing to do with what I was looking for. So I leave right away and there is almost NO ad that would catch my eye to keep me there in this case.
But when people do get to your page and stay long enough to read the content, you also have to be sure that the [affiliate] ads your displaying are HIGHLY relevant to them - so put yourself in their mindset - what would appeal to you? And would it appeal to you enough to convince you to click on it? If the answer is no, then it's likely (although not guaranteed) that no one else would click on it either, so don't waste your real estate on it, find something different.
AND if you're using Google AdSense, make sure you have the right keywords in your meta keyword tag that relate to your page content, not just a long list of keywords you want to rank for, AND take advantage of the code snippet you can use to TELL Google what keywords you're targeting....it will improve the relevancy of the ads that Google displays.....
