I'd like my manuscript read, but am unsure about approaching editors. I'd like a review of my work before I send it to a publisher. Is it best to send in my work or have someone review it first? Thanks!
How do you approach editors?

Hi Sarah
Trust me, you DEFINITELY want an Editor to look it over first, before you send it to a publisher.....sure, hiring an Editor will cost you money, but it can make the difference between your book being accepted or rejected. If a publisher is very, very kind and patient they may take the time to tell you to go get a good Editor, if not, you'll just get a rejection letter.
EVEN if you are an expert at spelling and grammar, that's not all an Editor does - many times they have the experience and objectivity to help you correct flaws in your plot or character development, help you smooth over rough patches, keep the action flowing, or suggest parts that should be eliminated if they don't add to the story.
In many cases, they also have the network of contacts to help you find the right literary agent, and will know which publishers would be best to approach when your book is ready.
If you haven't yet read Wendy VanHatten's guest post this week about using an Editor, you should.....I will quote her and tell you that it may sound cliche, but it's very true that a good Editor is worth her weight in gold.

Hi Sarah,
I completely agree with Tisha, an editor is crucial. If you cannot afford one, joining a writers group will offer additional eyes that will read your work who are emotionally removed from you work. Of course, a seasoned pair of are priceless.
Good luck,

I am in a few writers groups, but I don't think we have any editors. One gal had her work looked at by an editor but no money was exchanged. They did a barter exchange. She's a graphic designer; I think she designed a logo or something like that. Thanks for the advice...
