Well, I have a Twitter account. This is so easy, but I'd like to have notable and pertinent Twitter followers. I've been getting some followers that have nothing to do with my website. Some of the followers are very lewd. I though Twitter had policies in place for this. Help!
How can you gain notable and pertientTwitter followers?

Hey Martha,
You may want to do a "keyword" search. This is one way people find Twitter followers. Once you find fellow Twitters, you could go through them and find the ones that you want to follow; the ones that would pertain to your site. I think there are some programs you could use, but not sure about the cost.

Hi Angela - Rebecca is right that there are some tools you can use, many of which are free but not all. Searching is a good way to start.
There are many sites now that are designed to help Twitter users, and we're only just starting to explore them - I'm planning to post a review of around a dozen of them soon, so stay tuned! I'll post back here as well when I have more info after I finish the post.

I would recommend checking out WeFollow.com and Twellow.com to find twitter users who you want to follow ... as far as getting people to follow you, it is somewhat like anything in life ... network, produce good / interesting product / dialogue (NOT monologue!), and have patience.
Some people you follow through twellow.com will auto-follow you, and others might chose to follow, once you have been introduce.
Also, participate in #TravelTuesday / #TT and #FollowFriday / #FF where people suggest people they think others would also enjoy following.
Assuming you have interesting stuff to share and you have networked enough with others (like myself @mantripping) to have them know and respect you enough to refer you to their friends this will help your "followers" list grow.
There are MANY other ways to grow faster but the trade-off is targeted vs non-targeted followers.
I am happy to help anyone looking for help with Twitter feel free to post here or contact me directly.

Excellent advice James! I've used WeFollow but was unaware of Twellow - I'll check it out also.
I do find that I get the biggest bumps in the number of people following me on Tuesdays and Fridays thanks to all the wonderful people who do participate and share tweeps......
My biggest issue is finding time to check out all those who follow me to find who I want to follow back - personally I don't like auto-following (partially because I get a lot of people that follow me that are completely unrelated to anything that interests me). I recently started using TwitterKarma which allows you to follow/unfollow/block people in bulk but I still like to look at their twitter page first to see what they talk about, what they do, etc., and I try to check out their website as well if they list one - I guess I'm probably obsessing too much over who to follow, but I really want to be able to focus on just the people who have something really interesting to contribute, and when I do choose to follow someone, I do my best to share what they say with my followers, to help them as well.
BTW, welcome to the forum! And I LOVE your site! Mancations are a GREAT idea!

Ah, doh I can't believe I left out TwitterKarma ...
managing your twitter followers / follows really all depends on your personality and objectives ... are you going for the biggest number possible (in which case you either need to be a celebrity or use auto-followers to inflate your number). Or are you going for quality of your stream for your ease of processing the information (remember, your followers only receive your stream, not yours plus your follows).
Personally (with the exception of lewd or pure spam people) I tend to follow everyone unless they piss me off repeatedly. I do this because my goal with twitter is not just to talk with a select group of people i.e. travel industry, but also to interact with guys interested in guys travel (essentially this is 50% of the population - though I enjoy listening to / following women as well
)BTW There are tools like groups to keep a high follow / followers ratio, but still manage to weed out the noise. I do this with Hoot Suite's groups, but I am sure there are other tools as well.
Thanks for the kind words about Man Tripping!
