How can I receive my first travel writing assignment?

Unless you work as a staff travel writer for a publication, assignments are unlikely to just drop into your lap.....you have to be proactive about going after them.
There are many online resources for finding writing assignments, such as Elance.com and Guru.com, as well as many sites devoted to freelance writing - there are too many to list all of them here in a forum post, but I'll list a few below to get you started. After that you'll need to start searching to turn up more.
Basically you have two options:
1. Seek out assignments that you are interested in and apply for them (be sure to follow any guidelines posted) or;
2. Send a query letter to several Editors with an article idea that you have (again, be sure to follow any guidelines the publisher has posted), and be sure to read advice on writing Query letters, such as the excellent article posted on TWE by Maralyn Hill, president of the IFWTWA, "Do You Know How to Query?"
If you believe you're ready, then go for it!
