Wouldn't "holiday travel writing" make a great niche market? You could travel the states to find out how people prepare to celebrate the holidays, why they're so important, and interview people who travel for the holidays. You could also go international and find out how people celebrate in their country. Back in the states, you'd be able to check out all of those "Black Friday" specials and compare them from state-to-state!

I don't think it's a bad idea, but you would definitely want to research the market first to see if there are enough people out there who would be interested in reading about both holidays and travel.
Keep in mind that people searching on holiday travel are USUALLY looking for cheap travel deals, rather than information on how people celebrate travel.
But that's not to say that there isn't a potential audience, there certainly might be. AND there are certainly enough holidays all around the world to give you something to write about. But you'll still need to figure out a way to monetize your site by offering something that speaks to why they are at your site to begin with.
For example, people looking for information on how a particular holiday is celebrated in another country may (or may not) be looking for travel deals (they may just be doing a report for school), and people looking for cheap holiday travel deals may not care how that holiday is celebrated elsewhere.
If you can find the right angle to combine your content and your monetization strategy to appeal to the same audience, you might have a great niche!
