I stayed at Budget Backpackers in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2007. We had our own little community and looked out for each other. I think it's a good idea for travelers to have at least one "hostel" experience.

Welcome to the forum. Always nice to meet someone new.
I basically spent two-and-a-half years of my life in youth hostels when backpacking in Australia and New Zealand. I still prefer hostels over hotels, as they are great places to meet people.
