I've been thinking about creating my own website, I know! Has anyone done this and could you tell me how difficult it is? I'd like to create my own design because I don't care for the WordPress templates. I guess I could pay someone...Sigh...Just want a design that I like. Thanks!
Has anyone created their own travel writing website?

I haven't, but I'm thinking it would be a good idea for me to learn web design. I've had a lot of people ask me if I do that since I'm a freelance writer with a graphic design background. Perhaps you could find someone to design you a WordPress template, may be even barter your writing services for it. The alternative is to go back to school to learn web design or try to teach yourself by using tutorials. People I meet say it's not hard, then again they are experienced.

I recently built Tourfolio (http://www.tourfolio.com) and launched it maybe a month ago or so. I don't care for the standard Wordpress templates either but the one advantage is the foundation is all built. They are easily customizable (in my opinion) if you understand the language (html, css and php).
You could pay someone but if you want the website to earn some revenue, it could pose a problem because of the constant hiring of a developer to fix aspects of the site.
I built up my understanding from my college undergraduate degree and from experience of just playing around with coding. Once you understand the language, it becomes easy to "View Page Source" on any website and start to understand how it was put together.

I'll probably end up paying someone because I don't understand HTML and all that stuff. Cool website

I used an existing Wordpress theme as a starting point then hacked it to pieces in a way that I liked. Even though I'm comfortable with html and css and have played around with design and development before, it involved a lot of work - including learning a fair bit of PHP. I wrote a bit about the experience here.
Personally, I enjoyed it (I like dabbling in geeky) and I learned a lot that I now use all the time to tweak it, and I'm sure I'll use everything I've learned again in the future. But if you don't enjoy it or aren't confident, yep, it may be worth paying someone else.
Anyway, good luck
