Hi, I'm a new member of your forum and thought you might help me on this.
I'm planning to create a travel blog platform/portal like travelpod.com for my friends/family/relatives/neighbors etc.
So, I was wondering if I use WordPress 2.8 would I be able to get the result? Or I should use Joomla or something else?
Since WordPress is also new to me, will it be too difficult for me to achieve my goal in a short time?

I looked at Travelpod.com, and if that is what you want to build, you will need WordPress MU (the MU stands for Multi User)....
Although the standard WP blog software can support many authors, they are all basically writing to one blog - Travelpod.com actually houses multiple blogs with each being distinct, more like what Wordpress.com (the hosted version) and blogspot.com offer. For this you need WP MU, which is what powers Wordpress.com.

I can't answer your question about whether or not it will be too difficult for you to achieve your goal, because I don't know your technical background, nor what your timeframe is (a "short amount of time" for one person might be a week, for another it could be six months)...
Your best bet would be to give it a try, and make use of the WordPress support forum - there you'll find experts who moderate the forums - it's where I go when I need help.
