Does anyone know of any companies/websites that offer alternatives to housing? I'm not looking for a house swap, but perhaps more of a place to crash. Thanks.

Try couchsurfing.org - I haven't used them myself but I know several people who have, and they like it.

Crashing at someone's place has taken off. Check out Crashpadder.com for a list of people offering space in their home.
