The more time you spend recording and watching yourself, the more comfortable it will get. A word of warning, you will quickly become hyper-aware of every “Angela-ism” you possess and every “um” that slips from your lips... so embrace it. Your audience loves you and they're rooting for you, so there's no reason to worry.

My pre-speaking ritual includes: take a deep breath, exhale half of it (otherwise, I start my sentences with too much emphasis and talk waaaay too fast) and before I start talking, I look right into the camera lens and smile (it calms me and makes me think of people smiling back).

If the on-camera thing is just too much, cut out the visual of you and just narrate a video or series of photos.

I have another tip, but I’ve seen it completely backfire. Try holding a prop... something that you will incorporate into your recording. It can take the pressure off the spoken word. It might be a copy of the magazine that just published your latest article or a gadget or a souvenir. Just be careful with this one... I’ve seen too many videos of people who thought a sombrero could make anything more fun.

Great advice Trisha! I agree, be yourself and don't think about it.

Are you as shy when it's just your family or friends watching? Try imagining that you're just creating a video clip to share only with those closest to you, and it may help you to relax.

But remember, creating video may not be for everyone, I don't personally think it's critical for any blog. Sure for some people being able to see a video of a destination before they go there is nice, or even important, but for those people it's not about the "host" it's about the place, so you really don't even have to be on camera if you're really uncomfortable with it. Try creating a few clips that you're just narrating off-camera.

I'm a bit camera shy so I don't do a heck of a lot of vlogging. Any advice on how to overcome being shy on camera. I'm no actress, but I'd like to be presentable <img src="http://www.travel-writers-exchange.com/Forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

All I can offer is my own opinion, which is that I skip anything over 2 minutes unless it promises to be really, really good.....and I hate those videos that don't tell you how long the video is before or when you start it - if I have to guess how long it is, I only give it a few seconds to prove itself worthy, or I stop it and move on.....

BUT that's just me - you should probably get more opinions because it could be that others would watch a bit longer video than I would <img src="http://www.travel-writers-exchange.com/Forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

Duh! My bad. I had a feeling it meant video + blogging...Perhaps I'll create a short vlog when I travel this year...I'll keep it under 5 minutes. I have a tendency to skip videos that are more than 8 minutes, unless they're really interesting...

Actually it's not exactly new, but vlogging is just a contraction of video+blogging....

Basically it just means creating a video of your blog post, instead of typing it. I've seen a few Vlogs, and most of them have a brief text intro to their blog (vlog) post, but no more than that - you have to watch the video, rather than read a post.

Personally, I don't care for these types of blogs - I'm a busy person, and generally I scan a post quickly to determine if it's going to be worth the investment of my time and attention to read it fully. I don't have time to wander around the internet watching videos.

Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but it seems like the vast majority of people I meet and speak to are like me - very busy......it could be why this form of blogging isn't really getting 'hot' and why maybe you're just hearing about it.....it isn't really popular.

That's not to say it won't get popular - who knows where the fickle winds of popularity will blow - but it won't catch on with me.

If you do try it, I'd love to know so that I can check back with you on how it's working out!

I heard "vlogging" used in the travel community. Has anyone else heard of this? What does this new buzz word mean? Thanks!

Hi Martha

Sorry for the delay in getting a response - it's been a busy week and I know Rebecca has been very busy too (I think she's been attending a conference)....

Video blogging is getting more popular, and I can only speak to my own opinion, but the ones I like the best combine video with text - sometimes I don't have time to watch a video, but I can quickly scan an short article to see if I want to spend more time at that site later....so if I were going to go in this direction, I'd make a text post to accompany each video, with a brief summary of what's on the video, along with some "If you go" tips or other information (e.g. best time of year to go there, best place to stay, what to budget) things that don't always translate well to video - that way folks can get a sense of value before they decide if they want to invest time in watching a video.

That's just my two cents.....

There are millions of websites on the internet, let alone blogs. What if you only did video blogs and loaded them up on YouTube? I've been learning a lot about blogging and have increased my skills, but I'd like to visitors more. I've been thinking about posting a series of video blogs on YouTube now that I know how to use it and my web cam!
